Wyre Athletes Represent Lancashire

The 50th Boys and 42nd Girls Aviva ESAA English Schools' Cross Country Championship took place at Heaton Park, Manchester on Saturday 20th March 2010. Competing for your County Team can be a life-changing experience for children. For some, it is a stepping stone to future glory. For many, it will be the pinnacle of achievement.

Five athlete's from Wyre School’s represented Lancashire at this high profile event. Baines at Poulton provided four female athletes and St Aidan's at Preesall provided one athlete. The five female athletes had already completed a gruelling qualification course at Witton Park, Blackburn in order to make selection. Over 2000 athletes competed at the English Schools over six races with more than 350 athletes per race.

In the Junior Girls race (year 8 and 9) Wyre had three representatives with Amelia Beaman finishing first for the county in 28th, Rachael Scott finished 47th and Alisha Johnson finished 161st. The athletes performed brilliantly on a tough course and finished 4th team from 43, only one point off third!

In the Intermediate race (year 10 and 11) Wyre was solely represented by St Aidan's athlete Lauren Gowland. Lauren was the first Lancashire athlete to finish in 54th place despite only being a year 10, an excellent achievement on her birthday!

The final Wyre athlete to represent Lancashire was Kristie Leybourne of Baines 6th form in the Senior Girls event. Kristie has represented Lancashire Schools for more than five years, and this was her final cross country for the squad before University in September. Kristie was first counter for the county in 43rd place.

All athletes represented themselves, their schools and their county impeccably and should be proud of their achievements on a very wet and windy day in Manchester.

WELL DONE GIRLS!
