Garstang Schools Table Tennis Success!

Garstang Community Primary School table tennis team have done it again !! At the last round of the English Schools competition held in Blackburn on November 7th the team were crowned the champions of Lancashire. Sunday 24th January saw the team back at St Bedes School in Blackburn for the next round which saw them competing against the champions of Cumbria, Shropshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire for the title of North West champions.

The team of Ben Hynes, Lorcan Alty, Tom Hawkins, Tom Ruston and Harry Peake (photo below) got off to a great start in the group stage with a 7-1 win over St. Mary's Preparatory School from Merseyside, in the second group match they repeated the 7-1 victory, this time over Askam Village School in Cumbria, these two wins saw them go through to the semi-finals as group winners.

The semi-final saw the team pitted against Buildwas Primary School from Shropshire and once again the team came out on top with yet another 7-1 victory.

In the final the team once again met Askam Village School from Cumbria, victors of the other semi-final, the result of the match was the same as before, a 7-1 victory that saw the team crowned North West champions.

The team now move onto the next round to be held at St Bedes School in Blackburn on Saturday 27th February where they will face the winners from the North East and the Midlands.

The Under 16 girls team of Rebecca McGrath, Rebecca Hodgson, Jessica Hay and Kelly Southward didn’t fare quite as well as the primary boys team, they lost their first match and drew 4-4 in the second which meant they were tied for second place, and unfortunately lost out on countback and will progress no further in the competition.

It was a busy weekend for Garstang Table Tennis Club players, as well as the English Schools competition two Garstang players were in debut county action, on Saturday 14 year old Tom Hynes was appearing for Lancashire Juniors for the first time at Draycott & Long Eaton near Derby, he came home with a superb 3 wins out of 4 matches. Garstang coach Graham Coupe was also in debut county action, playing for Cumbria at the senior county championships in Chesterfield, however he didn’t fare quite as well as Tom coming home from the weekend with only two wins out of 14 matches !!
