Wyre Year 5/6 Tag Rugby Competition
Fleetwood Sports College hosted the regional Wyre Borough TAG Rugby qualifier on Friday 4th December. Primary School Year 5/6 mixed teams from all over Wyre descended on the Sports College to try and win a place at the prestigious annual County Finals next March. The event that was organised by the Wyre & Fylde SSP Competition Manager, Lee Cadwallader and RFU Community Rugby Coach, Greg Hodgkinson proved a big hit for the participants on Fleetwood’s astro turf.
The festival was also supported by the Wyre & Fylde SSP and their participation with the young Rugby Leaders Course. The 3 Junior Leaders from the Sports College helped referee and manage the event so that everything ran smoothly. This provided them with excellent opportunities to see exactly what it takes to organise and run local community events.
Local club, Fleetwood RUFC also gave their support to the event providing 2 volunteers who help coach and referee within the community. The support from the Club, College and SSP has been instrumental in providing a great pathway for youngsters enjoying their first taste of rugby. Some of the players only picked up a ball 3 weeks ago, to see them play so confidently and with no inhibitions was a joy to watch.
In total, 10 schools attended and over 100 children took part. The afternoon was finished with the Grand Final that saw ‘The Breck’ primary school from Poulton play ‘Shakespeare’ primary from Fleetwood. The game started brightly but The Breck ran out comprehensive winners and will progress to represent Wyre at the County Finals at Preston Grasshoppers RFC in March 2010.
